Vietnam Babylift Personal Stories
Jules Makk
Hello . My name is Jules Makk. It was just recently that aircrash invesigations showed the story of "Operation Babylift" on the TV. My sister, Lee Makk ( one of the nurses in care), perished in the crash with all those other unfortunates. All the memories came back. I was 14 years old at the time. After we heard of the news, the very next day I opened the door to rabid newsmen with microphones and cameras pointed in my face, slathering for a sympathetic story, when all they saw was a heartbroken little boy. They soon left.
Our family was devastated. Our sister was a kindhearted and loving person who was thrilled to be in the care of all these children as she had none of her own. My sister, Lee, was kind to me and I remember her buying me my first pair of ice skates. She used to draw and paint , loved to sing and even on the rare occasion would sing folk in a club somewhere in Adelaide. Lee had a hospital ward in Adelaide named after her where psychiatric patients are treated for their illnesses. I still have some of her drawings and a little box of stuff that was gathered from the crash site. I'm almost 50 years old now and, although the event is faded in my mind , I still think of her with great warmth and affection. She was always very kind to her little brother. I wish her God's peace and bliss, the peace that goes beyond all human understanding.
