Guestbook Entry from Kathy Manney, Clark AFB Babylift Volunteer:

At the time of Operation Babylift, April 1975, our family was living at Clark Air Base, Philippines where my husband was stationed as a crew chief on C-130 Hercules aircraft.

I volunteered with Operation Babylift as the infants and children passed through Clark in route to their adoptive homes.

Today, I am a freelance writer and newspaper columnist whose article "Orphaned by War" was published in Vietnam Magazine, October 2006.

The full feature article tells about Operation Babylift operations at Clark.

In the thirty years since Operation Babylift, I trust each of the children found loving and understanding homes.

***EDITOR'S NOTE:
Kathy Manney has graciously accepted the Heather Constance Noone Memorial Award on behalf of the Clark AFB Babylift volunteers. During Babylift, the majority of babies and children passed through Clark en route to the United States. It is this editor's belief that, without the around-the-clock care the children received at Clark AFB, several of the children would not have survived the journey home.

On a personal note, my daughters Heather (deceased) and Jennie Noone, age 31, were both very ill during their Babylift flights, and were cared for by the Clark AFB volunteers. I thank them for the kind concern they showed for all of the Babylift children.

Please contact Lana@Vietnambabylift.org.

Email correspondence will be forwarded to Kathy Manney.

comments: I am a survivor of the Operation Baby Lift crash. I have been wondering for years what happened to my plane that crashed. My US parents told me very little b/c I don't think they knew or wanted me to dwell on it beyond being a miracle baby. My parents still live in Missouri where I grew up. They adopted 6 children (one a grandchild) and was the youngest of 5. I live in Southern CA now b/c I have decided to stay after attending college here.

I would love to talk to other survivors or anyone who could help me answer some questions. I spoke to Sister Susan McDonald who worked in the orphanage and we spoke for 1 hr and 30 min and she helped me answer a lot of questions. I knew I'd find out answers in time when God wanted me to know.

A few years ago I needed a dermatologist so I looked up with matches of doctors who accepted my insurance on the web. Scheduling wasn't good for me and I finally found one I could get into I think the same day or next day. Well when I met Dr. Dao at the front she asked me if I was Vietnamese. I told her I was and I was adopted. Before I could tell her my story she was telling me about my plane crash. She and her sister volunteered at orphanages in Vietnam back then. She was not at my orphanage but was still a part of my cause. Ever since then she as thought of me as a son or close friend. She is a lot more special than I am. She goes back to Vietnam every year and helps the children with books and medical supplies.

I'd love to learn more about what went on. Fell free to send me any articles.
Thanks for helping,

Don Volkerding

I have been back to Vietnam twice and feel so lucky to have spent time there and learned a little about where I was born and where my ancestors are from. I was always told I was "special" because I was adopted, and now I read this web page and it seems there are so many more "special" ones out there too!

I was vietnamese born in july 1967 in Quang Nam Provine and took care by Sisters of Saint Paul from Sacred Heart Orphanage in Danang. I left Vietnam on january 1969 to be adopted to France thanks to Rosemary Taylor and Terre des Hommes - France.

I'm trying to reconstruct my past. I have already collected information from Sr Susan Mcdonald, Rosemary Taylor, sisters, others adoptees and former soldiers.

I'm searching for any piece of information about me and this period when I was at Sacred Heart orphanage in Danang : testimonies, photos, additional information. If you have this, thank you in advance to contact me in order to share.

Best regards from France.

My name is Huong Totten. I am Vietnamese. I currently reside in Massachusetts. I was born and grew up in Vietnam until I was 17. I came to the US for education and got married to an American just a couple of months ago. I still travel to Vietnam for visits often because most of my family is still in Vietnam.

I am looking for oportunities to give back to life with this very little knowledge I have to offer. I know about Vietnamese culture and the language. By reading your website, I am touched with what you have done and how much you have established to try connect lost Vietnamese/American faimily members together. If you need help or if you know if anyone who needs helpl with their work, I would be honor to be able to lend a hand. I could translate Vietnamese to English and vice versa. I could be a contact if people want to know more about the country or the culture...

This is the first time I have ever done something like this therefore I apologize if I was any mishap from my part during the email.

Looking forward to hearing from you

comments: PLEASE HELP ME...I am Very Lost In every aspect. As many of you, I was born Nguyen Thi Thu Cuc in Tra Vinh Hoa (sp?) on March 25th, 1973 South Vietnam, and lived the first year and a half in Hoa Khanh Orphanage in Sadc (sp?) Near Saigon...I was adopted by an American Family (which I am greatful of) and flew out of Saigon April 15th 1975. I have my adoption decree stating my name, my birth mother's name, the village(?) I was born in, and the Orphanage I ended up in. I am now 32 years old and I am fighting every day with myself to find out more about myself. Libraries and Bookstores do not seem to do me any justice. My Mother - died shortly after I was born...I was told due to complications with birth...but I am doubting that the more and more I try to get information. My father-I do not know about...South Vietnamese Soldier or an American Soldier. Either way, I would like to know who he could be, if he wants to be known or if in fact he is still alive. I have been struggling with how and when to even start finding out who and where I am from. A very close girlfriend has supported me and has urged me to contact anybody by message boards or chat rooms with asian adoptees from Vietnam. I was the first Vietnamese/Asian human to be raised in the Southern Part of Oregon, not saying that my adopted family didn't do the best they could with what resources they had, but sadly, Southern Oregon did not have the cultural resources as Portland Oregon or even San Fransisco California had. I do wish though that there had been more Resources for my family Now to have had around them so I wouldn't be so lost 30 1/2 years later. I love my family DEARLY and I wouldn't give them up for anything. I just need to know more about my heritage because I am going to drive myself batty. I have struggled enough in this cruel world, just because of who I am. However, I have become MORE Proud of WHO I am because of the struggles and challenges I have faced. I would LOVE to get any feedback from ANYONE who was there during that time period or just to hear some details of where I am from. I need to start compiling a network of Vietnamese Adoptee friends so I can start to grow again. Thank you for listening and I truely feel I belong by just reading these entries.

Much gratitude to the pioneering work and dedication so many did in the 60's and 70's that laid the foundation for my being able to adopt my beautiful children in 2000 and 2002. Vietnam has captured my heart, and I long to return. I have met so many of the first generation adoptees and they have been so helpful to me in opening my eyes to some of the issues my children may face as they grow in a trans-cultural family. comments: I am one of the amazingly fortunate babies that were rescued during Operation:Babylift in Cambodia. I was adopted in the United States by a loving American family when I was just a baby. I arrived malnourished and extremely weak. Doctors had estimated my age by my teething. I don't have any memories, and I often wonder what my life would be like had I survived and remained in Cambodia. I don't know anything of my biological family. I was found orphaned before leaving the country. I have many questions that I've come to the realization that they will probably never be answered.

I'm now 31 years old, healthy, well educated, successful, and still remain grateful to be alive. I just would like to thank everyone that was involved from military to volunteers. You unselfishly saved my life.

We know little of her life in Vietnam and at this point due to our children being so young we due not have face to face contact with our children?s Birth-Mom.

We know that she was born in or found at a Catholic Orphanage in Saigon. She was raised in the Hamilton area and now lives in Northern Ontario. She had a hard up-bringing and moved away from her adopted home at a young age.

My husband and I are blessed by her as we share 3 beautiful angels. Their ages are 3 years, 2 years and 4 months.

I hope to learn all I can about your experiences and form friendships with you as we believe it to be very important that our children know their past so that if they wish to meet their Birth-Mom this may be a way for her to learn of her past and heal from the wounds as well.

It moves me greatly to think of strength that you all have. You are all very special people.

With Blessings
Jess

comments: I was stationed at Travis AFB, Calif. when the plane was prepped for the trip across the pond to the PI's. We had loaded it with airline seats that had been taken out at Clark AB. At our local Vietnam Veterans Wall Memorial I placed a small memorial on the 30th aniversary of the crash. These were people I was stationed with, loaded their planes, and passed in the halls of the frieght terminal when they were there. Maybe some day there can be a memorial here in our country to their gallent deeds.

comments: Hi my name is Saran Bynum, 34years old; I am a Black/Vietnamese adoptee who lives with an African American Family in New Orleans. I left Ba Ria Provence in '73 when I was 3 years old. I was located at the An Phung Orphange in Bai Truoc. Just recently I started to search for my past after seeing "Antione Fisher" I didn't know that my kind existed until I saw the CNN special of adoptees on the panel. I was so happy to see more Black/Vietnamese adoptees. I was fortunate to have met Cahn, who was surprised that I was adopted by black parents.

My experience with my parents is great, I am learning about my African American heritage, and just reconnecting to my Vietnamese heritage; but at the same time, I had a hard time fitting in with the black community, Asian community and white community growing up.

Growing up, I chose to make my life a gift to others. I have done numerous community activities, mentored the youth for the NAACP, taught art to community kids, and lead a few organizations here in New Orleans. My now grandfather is an activist here in New Orleans, former local NAACP president. He has taught me allot about loving who you are and giving back to the community. So far I found a writer for the San Antonio Times who wrote a story about my orphanage, An Phong Orphanage, she was there in '1970. She sent me a picture of my guardian, Sister Catherine who is presumed dead. Another sister who was there is Sister Lucie.

I am writing a book about my experience, and plan to publish it, and do a documentary as well. I have meet a few more black/Vietnamese adoptees along the way, they live in Wisconson. I have found, that the ones who flew out before '75 have been left out in honoring the babylife era. We plan to go to Vietnam on a sponsorship but are having trouble identifying some sources. I would love for our stories to be told as well (black/vietnamese experience.)

I would love to share my story with as many people as I can. I can be contacted at (email address above) thank you.

comments: To Maggie Coleman, I escorted two orphans from clark AB to Travis AfB. I had come to Clark from Wallace AS for out processing to fly to my next duty station. I remember well the smile I received from the volunteer who handed the baby to me to place in her little box. The little boy, I don't recall any ID for either of them, sat in the aisle seat on the C-141. After reading your letter and many others, I realize that I am not alone in my quest to remember that experience and to know what is happening today. Even more important are the thoughts and feelings of the adoptees. Needless to say, my heart is touched deeply. This experience lives on unlike many others.

comments: Hi, Lana. My name is Brent Kurkoski. I am an Vietnamese adoptee and have met you a few times before. Your daughter, Jen, in fact, was the first adoptee I'd ever met while I was living in New York City back in 2000.

I was introduced by Jen to a network of individuals connected to the Vietnam and the adoption process. Ever since I have been set on a journey to discover my history and heritage which continues to this day. I currently live in Vietnam and am now happily married and have a son. Indeed, I have returned to the source.

I would very much like to reconnect with Jen as I've heard she, too, will be returning to Vietnam again soon. There is much I have learned and would love to share.
Peace,
Brent (Tran Duc Thien)

I pray that the kids who did get out are living happy, peaceful lives in the US, Australia and the other countries who received them!

We have your adoption records and four of the staff we had in 1975 are still with FCVN. You have never been far from our hearts. We would love to hear from you.

To Margaret's niece, your aunt was a wonderful person, with a great sense of humor! We had the pleasure of having her stay with us on one of her trips to Denver. We also saw her in action in Vietnam. How we all mourned her death and how her memory stays within our hearts.

G'day there,

I was a nurse on Operation Babylift to Australia and have often wondered where the babies and children were to-day - 30years later- both in Australia and the USA.

This was the highlight of my nursing career. Sadly two of the babies we airlifted died during the flight but I know that others have gone on to live a healthy full life and I would love to hear from any of you.

I feel deeply blessed to have been part of the team who stepped up to the plate to save the lives of these little ones. With love to you all.

May the Lord bless you abundantly.

I was a crew member on some of the flights out of Siagon. My roomate was a crew member on the C-5 that crashed. My Unit The Ist. Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron out of Pope AFB assigned some of us Air Force Flight Medics to go to Vietnam and fly missions. we were assigned to MacDill AFB in Tampa Fla.

I was there as a crew member and recall flying children in boxes out of Saigon, held down by cargo tie down straps. As I saw the date approaching I decided to look on the internet and came across this web site.

If anyone wants to talk about this event .... drop me a few lines ...... if you were a member of the flight crew, remember we diverted to Clark AFB because we needed food for the kids....! Originally I am from New Jersey and my nickname was "The Animal" Wow..30 years ago... Time sure has passed.

Hello Everyone -

I will be leaving for Vietnam in two weeks to participate in a medical mission and conduct some research. The group that I'm working with, Project Vietnam (www.projectvietnam.net) is asking team members to help fundraise for backpacks that we'll be distributing to orphans and ethnic minority children. I'm hoping that you will consider donating. Each backpack costs $3.50 USD and will have vitamins, parasite medication, and a toy. We need to fund 2,000 backpacks and the mission starts Nov. 1st.

I can personally assure you that Project Vietnam's work is worth supporting given the group's track record in not only treating communities, but also training Vietnamese physicians and other health practitioners so that their impact can be felt long after the team has left. Dr. Quynh Kieu heads the effort and is a friend who has worked tirelessly to assist the most needy. Project Vietnam is associated with the American Academy of Pediatrics.

I would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Donations can be made via web or snailmail:

Hi, my Vietnamese name was Tran Tri Thang Lona. My American name is Loan Renee Angel. I was one of the babies that a lot of you help. I was the flight before the last flight out. I was 7 years old. I remember my mother saying good bye to me and I was hugging her and this man came and pulled me from my mother and all I could do was cry and yell for her. He took me on a moped. I remember looking back yelling for my mother. She keep getting smaller and smaller until she was gone. He took me to this really big airplane. I waited in line for a name badge and after I recieved my badge they put me on the plane. That was the last time I saw my mother. I am also looking for my fahter. He worked for Lear Siegler Inc. They sent him to Vietnam and the worked at the Tan Son Nhut Airport. His first name is Bob. My mother said that he lived with her for 3 to 4 months maybe longer. My mother lived at 351/24 Nugyen Trong Tuyen F01 Q Tan Hinh Vietnam. Her name is Tran Tri Sua (nickname Sno). If you could please help me please contact me at madeanangel@yahoo.com I have a picture of my father. If you want to see his picture please email me.

My husband (USAF)and I were both involved in Operation Babylift while stationed at Clark AB. My husband put the children on planes in Saigon and I took them off at Clark AB. My best friend at Clark was Sandra Johnson, wife of MSgt Denning C. Johnson, a med-tech, who was killed when the door blew on the C-5. After the confirmation of his death, Sandra asked to tour the base gym where all the babys were sheltered as she requested to see the children her husband died for. I accompanied her. I think every family member on Clark was involved in the care of these children. After the Babylift concluded, I stayed and continued to work with the refugees whose numbers included a large number of orphans. One of the last flights to Clark from Saigon contained approximately 70 children. The plane was packed and many of the children had to stand throughout the entire flight. Also, many of those who stood were carrying siblings. After we unloaded the aircraft, buses arrived to take the children to the gym. I sat on the bus and held a beautiful little boy of approximately 2 years. He was wearing a blue sweater. He had a name tag pinned to the front of the sweater but all it said was "little boy, blue sweater." I oftenpwonderet what happened to him, and pray he was well taken care of and loved. I have enjoyed reading the information on your web site and am happy you have honored those who gave their lives for their precious cargo. I noticed in the comments that Yvonne Pickering wrote about her father Denning Johnson. Yvonne was only five when he died and was really not aware of what was going on. I remember laying on her bed with her on the evening of the crash, trying to get her to sleep. She looked at me and said, "I'm never going to see my daddy again." Oh what heart break. I have, over the years, lost contact with Sandy and her family. Would it be possible for you to send Yvonne my e-mail address and ask her to write me. If you cannot, I certainly understand, but I sincerely hope you are able to as I have some pictures of her family, including her father, that I am sure she would like to have. Thank you Maggie Coleman

MTV- MY LIFE (TRANSLATED)
Greetings!

We are working on a documentary special for MTV which features transcultural young adults, entitled My Life (Translated), and is hosted by actress/MTV personality SuChin Pak. The show has been successful for MTV as a sincere, honest program that explores and educates issues surrounding transculturalism. Check out the link to the MTV.com site: http://www.mtv.com/bands/m/mylifetranslated/

We are now producing a story on transcultural adoptions and exploring the issues and struggles that arise when a young adult has decided to begin the journey of reconnecting with their heritage. Raised in an American culture, what happens when a young adult decides to explore a new ethnicity? What stereotypes must they challenge? How do their adoptive parents feel about the decision? Do the parents pressure them to remain Americanized? What are the positive rewards they encounter? How did they convince their parents to help them with the journey? Seeking to readopt their ethnic heritage, do they face criticism from the ethnic community they want to join? What happens when parents encourage reconnection, but the child just isn’t interested? How does a young adult maintain a crucial balance of cultural experiences?

If you are interested in sharing your journey with MTV, email us at MLT@mtvstaff.com. Tell us about your experiences and how your parents feel (or might feel) about your decision. Be sure to include your name, age and the best way to contact you. Keep in mind we are attempting to create a very positive story about the process and the journey, and share the unique experiences of transcultural adoptees in America.

I came across this site last week. My aunt Margaret Veronica Moses died in the C-5 Galaxy Plane Crash. My mother and father have through-out my 33 years told me many stories of about her as did my grandmother and my other aunts and uncles. Her compassion, selflessness, love of children, willingness to do anything to get the job done, her sence of humour and her beautiful poetry I have carried with me my whole life. I have always held her dear to my heart, read books about her work and have always thought of her as an angel that looks over me. I am so happy tp have learned that her legacy and that of her comrades have been honored. Thank you.

After this manner therefore pray ye:
Our Father which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven.

I was a C-130 Navigator assigned to the 21 TAS in Clark AB from 1974-1976. I was heavily involved in the transfer of refugees from Saigon to the Philippines and then to Guam. I also have the unfortunate task of being directed enroute from Thailand to Clark to Ton Son Nhut AB to pick up remains of adults and children killed in the C-5 baby lift crash. I spent many hours helping to load body bags and will never forget the smell or the fact that some bags (usually Americans) looked like bodies while the other shapeless bags were full of body parts of children. It haunts me to this day but it was so fortunate there were survivors and I would visit them in the Air Force Hospital at Clark AB. It was a very sad time for people in Viet Nam and as an American I feld great shame on the way we left them stranded. It makes me so happy now to see how successful the Vietnamese are in this country (Note: all you have to do is go to a high school graduation and listen to the many Viet names of the top scholastic performers).

The Sharon Ann Lane Foundation Clinic
Dearest lady,

Many thanks for founding this site and educating me to yet another group of Vietnam Veterans!

It gives me great joy and Peace to see several enteries from VN Vets friends, Kerry Pardue and Bill MacDonald. They have hearts as big as houses and have worked on the SAL-clinic with us. (Medical clinic in Vietnam in memory of Army Nurse Sharon Ann Lane, killed on June 8, 1969 by incoming mortar into the Vietnamese ward 4 of the 312th Evac Hopital at Chu Lai, RVN)
(panel 23W line 112 THE WALL , Washington DC)

Sharon, where she alive today ,would surely smile on what you are doing with OpBabylift adoptees and the assistance you are so generousely giving to those American families who have since adopted and continue to adopt children of developing nations.

We thank the good God for you and Operation Babylift!
You, your adult children and all those who came to America will always be so dear in our hearts.
You who have given us such a treasured gift! LOVE and understanding.

One of my dearestv friends, Army Medic Ken Armstrong
from our hospital, 12th Evac in Cu Chi, RVN, adopted "Ri" a spirited young amputee of five in 1969. Later he took a second son. Ken and his wife now work in Cambodia with orphanages.

God bless you gentle lady. We love ya.
Thank you for the honor of knowing you and your family.

Dear Ms. Noone, I have an uncle in Vietnam who is asking for my help in searching for his son who was placed in an orphanage in Saigon, Vietnam during the war. I did some research on Operation Babylift and stumbled to this web page. I found out that this orphanage in Vietnam was lifted out and heading for Denver Co. which I believe was Continental Care Center. I have all the info on the child and the date and the street location of the orphanage. I am just hoping that you can give me any lead or how about searching for this child. Any info would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Thanks, Lana, for telling me of this site. It is a great way
to memorialize many of the memories of "babylift", as well
as to educate about the undertaking. I am a former US State

uniting them with their putative fathers.

Although now in the private practice of immigration law,

Amerasians looking for their fathers. We still do what we
can to be of help, and you may certainly release my name

Hi-

I stumbled across this website after trying to find some information on someone that was trying to contact me. I am an adoptee from Operation Babylift and am grateful and appreciative beyond words for all of those who were in Vietnam. I have an I-94 Form that I am trying to decipher. It's a Pan Am flight 592 and the date is April 8, 1975. Then it says SFR 1101. If anyone knows what the 1101 stands for, it is greatly appreciated.

The Same Smile
Lana, Thanks for sending me to your website. Being a teenager of the 60's, I remember Vietnam and the Babylift very well. One of my dear friends adopted one of the wonderful little boys who were brought here, at the time. Although, he suffered an untimely death, dying in his 20's, his life brought my friend and her husband great happiness.
Being a birthmom, I know the peace of heart I gained when I found my daughter and met her amazing adoptive family. Both she and I feel very blessed that she was placed with such loving people. Our graditude was such, that she and I wrote our story, THE SAME SMILE, to tell the world about our adoption journey.
I, too, lost a daughter (1990) and my heart goes out to you in the loss of your's.
Warm regards,
Susan

Summary for VAN 2003 Vietnam Trip

I traveled on behalf of VAN from Nov. 15 to November 28, 2003 and had an amazing adventure. Here is a summary of the trip.

Reunited birth father and brother with adopted daughter in the states-traveled to remote northern village to deliver letter, picture and gifts from adoptee in US to her birth father and brother. The family did not know what had happened to the daughter and were very relieved to receive word of her good health and success in the US. It was a privilege to be a part of the moment and see
their pure joy and gratitude.

Donated building funds to former Tan Mai Orphanage-traveled to the former Tan Mai Orphanage in Bien Hoa and met nuns that cared for me and other adoptees prior to leaving Vietnam in 1975. The nuns look forward to meeting other returning adoptees in the future. If you'd like contact information for this orphanage, please e-mail me. VAN was able to provide funds to assist in building maintenance costs. The structure is now used as a school for boys and girls. There are no longer orphans at this facility.

Provided scholarships for 5 orphans in Hoi An. VAN was able to scholarship 5 orphans for the 2004 school year. They need classes in math and science so they can pass the university entrance exams next year. By focusing on their education, these students have a better chance of providing for themselves in the future.

I was able to establish contacts in northern, central and southern Vietnam that are interested in working with VAN in the future.
The trip was very successful and I look forward to traveling back in 2004. Through out the year, VAN will be raising money for future projects. If you'd like more information on this program, or to travel with VAN, please contact me at bree@van-online.org

Thanks for sending the information regarding your Vietnam Babylift web site. I have not read your book but I will as soon as possible.
I have been to Vietnam 4 times since 1996 and I plan on returning. My brother has been missing in action since January 8, 1973. He was a helicopter pilot. He married a Vietnamese woman just before he was shot down. I found her myself in 1997. I also have an Amerasian nephew named Son Ngoc Chau. He is married and has two children of his own. Yes, my brother has grandchildren. My sister-in-law, nephew and family all live in Memphis. I love them dearly. I love Vietnam. I feel close to my brother when I visit. I love the Vietnamese children. I am currently trying to bring one of my brother's Vietnamese nieces over here. It is going to take a while, but I do not give up. I have obtained VA benefits for my sister-in-law and I am now fighting for retroactive benefits. She was his wife and he loved her. My brother can not fight for her, so I must do it for him. He gave his life for us.

I met a woman who was involved in operation Babylift but I can not remember her name. She was here in Jacksonville, OR at La Fiesta Restaurant with my friend Mai. Forgive me for not remembering.

I commend you for your efforts. Thank you again for notifying me of this tremendous, heartwarming endeavor.
